Why not still enjoy the basement while you accommodate your in-laws? Our vision in designing your basement was to use the space in many ways as possible. To create privacy entering from the back door to the in-law suite, we placed sliding doors that enables the space to be divided and united as wanted. When closed, the doors provide a winter garden feeling with a cozy study and lounge, from where you can enter the bedroom of the in-laws. So even if the bedroom is being used, you can still access the the lounge and chill. Folding doors are considered to be able to create the whole  space  as the in-law suite for a long stay.

The kitchenette placement was dependent on the existing plumbing which you described in the Q&A. We have created a niche where the kitchen equipment just fits right in. The sofa can be used both as a dining corner and a relaxation corner. The electrcal fireplace creates a cozy environment.
The closet under the stairs is thought out to be a wine cellar and general kitchenware storage.
A nice ascending box shelf system would be perfect for both aesthetic and utilities. The larger closet can be used to keep all the fitness equipment you had in the photographs and with a full wall mirror and a nice lighting, that closet could be used as a fitness room.
